Peter Scardino's Prostate Book
By Dr Peter T Scardino
Full Title: Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book: The Complete Guide to Overcoming
Prostate Cancer, Prostatitis and BPH
Many men have an almost irrational fear of prostate problems that prevents
them from seeking help just at the time when they should be doing just that.
This book, by Peter Scardino of the department of urology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Center in New York and the head of the center's prostate cancer program, will
hopefully dispel much of this fear by proving the facts about prostate problems
in general and the modern-day treatment options.
This 496-page hardback book is divided into three parts, containing extensive
illustrations. Part One introduces the prostate and what it does. Part Two
explains frequent prostate problems that more than half of all men will face,
including prostatitis and enlarged prostate. Part Three presents everything
that's presently known about prostate cancer. This latter part alone should
serve to alleviate the fears many have about the disease.
Simply and concisely Scardino discusses prostate cancer risk factors, detection
and prevention and, whilst acknowledging the lack of one standardized treatment,
he presents the available options and their success statistics. He also discusses
in detail the important side effects related to some treatments that many men
are anxious about but often afraid to discuss with their doctors. These include
urinary, bowel movement and sexual implications.
Clear and concisely Scardino introduces the various approaches to the disease,
including surgery, radiation therapy, even just surveillance – each
with their inherent advantages and disadvantages. An extensive glossary and
notes are also provided.
Peter Scardino's book is arguably the most comprehensive lay persons' guide
available today for comprehending and dealing with prostate problems.
It also includes at the back a very useful addition of an up-to-date section
containing additional resources for men with prostate problems together with
many related web addresses.
This book is also an excellent reference volume even for those without prostate
cancer, but who wish to reduce the risks of contracting it. It is a highly
recommended investment in your health. More
